MAXIMUM REAR-WHEEL PERFORMANCE ON MIXED SURFACES
The R model has a specific design for the rear wheel: added traction for better power transfer from pedaling and increased braking efficiency, as well as greater durability for a fast and confident ride on a variety of surfaces, both dry and wet, and with SmartGRIP rubber compound properties. In addition, the tyre features a high level of reliability and long service life. Excellent combination with the M model on the front wheel.

Presenting the first results of Pirelli's work carried out under the supervision of DH legend Fabien Barel and in collaboration with downhill and enduro racing teams. The Scorpion™ E-MTB is a range of 3 different tread patterns for different terrain conditions, from M (mixed surface), to R (versatile rear tire), to S (soft and loose surface), developed to offer a complete range of performance tires for everyday use on the trails. The Scorpion™ E-MTB range is designed for performance mountain bikes with electric motor support. The tyres are designed to withstand the power of modern electric bikes, whose torques are getting higher and higher. The Scorpion™ E-MTB provides grip and reliability where it's needed: the patented HyperWALL™ construction achieves DH (downhill) reliability without excessive weight, while the patented SmartGRIP Gravity rubber compound enables grip on dry and wet surfaces, as well as excellent tear resistance, thanks to a patented and sustainable chemical component called Lignin. The tire thus has performance that lasts for the life of the tire, even after partial wear of the pattern.

Innovative technology that Pirelli has brought to the world of cycling thanks to its experience and background in motorsport: a newly designed construction of the bead and sidewall of the tyre that further improves its characteristics - handling using low air pressures and resistance to punctures. Key features for off-road use, especially in the most demanding disciplines such as gravity and eMTB, are the integrity of the tire's foot and the stability of the sidewalls. The tread, with its sophisticated rubber compound tread pattern, relies heavily and its behaviour is dependent on the stability and integrity of the bead and sidewall. Pirelli has introduced a design where the bead and rubber sidewall insert are held firmly in place by a woven material coupling, so that they behave as one piece, not two separate components with the ability to move relative to each other, which is the normal standard of tire construction. The benefits of this technology in numbers (based on Pirelli's internal laboratory and practical tests): improved bead stability (+10%), better puncture protection (+50%), better handling when using low air pressures (+25%), greater resistance to sidewall punctures.
HyperWALL construction is a technology designed for mountain bikes because it provides additional reinforcement of the tire sidewalls and better puncture resistance. A rubber insert firmly bonded to the bead provides excellent puncture protection, as well as stronger support at lower inflation pressures.
SmartGRIP
The premium rubber compound is the product of Pirelli's experience gained from off-road racing circuits for 2 and 4 wheels around the world. Pirelli engineers have developed a compound with two diametrically opposed properties:
- puncture resistance: guarantees maximum mechanical grip and grip in dry conditions and higher puncture resistance along with longer life
- Chemical wet grip: no need to think about changing conditions, whether it will rain or if there will be muddy and slippery sections on the track
The result is a longer lasting tire that not only has excellent grip and traction in opposing conditions such as dry and wet, but also maintains these handling characteristics as the pattern wears. Unlike multi-compound rubber compounds (two or three), SmartGRIP's single-compound formulation allows for balanced handling characteristics as the tire wears and over its lifetime. The greater mechanical resistance of the rubber also provides greater resistance not only to wear, but also to punctures, so more force is required to cut or puncture the tire.
